Occasionally I’m in a reflective mood – and this is one of those times. 5 years have passed since we formed Age Concern Fuengirola y Mijas with just one social club and a couple of dozen Clients. 7 of us who realised that something needed to be done in our community decided to just get on with it – and so the Charity was born.

Now, we could have called ourselves anything but decided that a name that evoked honesty, transparency, commitment and was already known would better fit the bill. A year’s probation later we were on our own. We thought long and hard about our goals and in the end decided that we would be there for Clients to provide Advice, Support, Help and of course friendship.

We were, and still are, intent on eradicating Loneliness and Isolation which are the bane of old age and the very nature of that burden means that people who really need a Helping Hand are the last to ask for support. Unfortunately it seems to be a generational thing!

5 years on those couple of dozen Clients have multiplied many times over and that single social club has grown to 4. Our Welfare Team have also expanded to meet demand. We are a “can do” Charity that has attracted “can do “ volunteers who in turn are the backbone of our success. Everything we do, every decision we make is Client focused.

All our volunteers, without exception, give their time and talent freely. Nobody receives any remuneration. That includes helping Clients to get to their appointments at Hospital of their Doctor at no cost to them. As a Charity we are always looking forward and not sitting back complacently on past success. We are determined to be even better, try even harder and help even more Clients in EVERY coming year

As I write this another incoming email tells me that a new person wants to be a volunteer. Similarly Linda, our Head of Welfare, is constantly answering calls for advice, support and help. The 4 social clubs provide the much valued friendship

2 year ago we opened our Charity shop which has happily become a focal point for the local community in Los Boliches. Our Teams of shop volunteers not only look after our customers shopping needs but can provide much valued information for many with nowhere else to turn. If they are stuck for an answer there will be one to be found just a phone call away.

Thanks to our Shop and popular Fundraising events we are able to plough money back into the Charity for the benefit of Clients and customers alike who can enjoy a stress free spacious shop that is accessible to everyone. With a full social calendar throughout the year our Clients can look forward to weekly get togethers, monthly lunch clubs, special events, concerts, not forgetting our special “mini-cruise” and much more.

A number of these events are either FREE to Clients or heavily subsidised. Unlike many clubs or associations to join us at Age Concern Fuengirola, Mijas y Benalmadena is free of charge. So what are you waiting for?

We are a very friendly bunch of people so you are always assured of a warm welcome. Having read this far, if you like the idea of catching up with old friends or making new ones please come down and check out any one of our clubs.

If you feel that a personal chat with one of our Welfare Team would help or indeed if you’d like information about the Charity and how you can help ( be it Volunteer, Donor or Supporter ) then please call our INFORMATION and HELPLINE on 652537615. The line is open EVERY weekday from 10 – 5 pm and an out-of-hours message service means we strive to get back to you the next working day

Regrettably we are NOT an Emergency service for which you will need to call 112 and ask for an English speaker

Age Concern offers a “Helping Hand” to our senior English speaking community in Fuengirola, Mijas and Benalmadena regardless of nationality.  To us age is not the barrier many think it is and Loneliness and Isolation do not need to be fixtures in our later years

None of the foregoing would have been possible without the support of the whole community, Town Halls, the media and of course the best volunteers in the business. Thank you Everyone.

We look forward to welcoming Clients old and New at the following Age Concern clubs

EVERY Thursday we are at Gastrobar Julios Bartola, Mijas Pueblo opposite the Doctors surgery from 11.00 – 1.00 pm
