About Us

Age Concern Fuengirola Mijas & Benalmadena is an independent local charity run solely by volunteers and governed by an Executive Committee.

We provide a variety of services and offer a wide range of activities and opportunities to English speaking people over the age of 50 every week, including those who may be vulnerable or socially isolated.

As a charity we strive to improve the quality of our services and to develop strong relationships in our community in an environment where funding is scarce, and collaboration and integration of services are key.

We Can't Change the World, but We Can Make It Easier

Background

The initial idea for the charity was conceived by two local ladies, already undertaking welfare work in the local community. They identified the lack of help available for the English speaking over 50’s community in the Fuengirola and Mijas area. Weekly drop-in sessions in Fuengirola were already underway and proving successful so expanding the help further seemed only natural.

A committee of like-minded people from the community got together and decided to form a charity, however rather than create a new charity it was decided the best way forward would be to build on the success of Age Concern and form a local association. Age Concern Fuengirola y Mijas was formed, and its constitution accepted and registered by the Registro de Asociaciones de Andalucia, in July 2014.

Since 2014 the charity has been busy increasing the services and help it offers now including support in Benalmadena. The charity continues to grow but is still limited in what it is able to deliver relying on the support and generosity of the local community and partner organisations.

    Our Mission

    Exists to care for and work with older adults and their carers in and around the Fuengirola Mijas & Benalmadena community to improve their quality of life through the promotion of choice, opportunity and independence by implementing our core values;

  • Listening
  • Being approachable, accessible and responsible. Caring about what older adults think, taking account of their views. Caring about what older adults need, asking what is important to them
  • Enabling
  • Offering people as little or as much support as they need to help themselves
  • Influencing
  • Ensuring that the voice of older adults is heard on matters which concern them
  • Empowering
  • Providing people with choices based on reliable up to date information
  • Effectiveness
  • Ensuring good standards in all our services, focussing on the outcomes for older adults. Working in a way which places people in the centre of our planning.

Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much
